I've been pretty busy lately, but I have been keeping my eye on a few things. Most notably the Springfield Falcons because, well, they're local. (#yourtownyourteam) They have won their last 3 after an overtime loss got them over the .000% hump. They have moved up over Portland and have only played eight games. Granted its a shorter season and eight games is a lot more than what its worth in the NHL, but its still less than most on the leader board. If they maintain the momentum, they could end their first 10 above .500, something entirely possible given that they face the bottom seeded Portland Pirates followed by the Soundtigers whom they already beat the next night.
What is impressive is the shift in momentum. Following that over time loss to the Baby Pens, Springfield has out scored opponents 16-4. Its becoming an outright domination spree the past three games. Granted the opponents they have won against were a .500 Rochester team, a (barely) sub .500 team, and the Bridgeport Dark Horses. While they don't seem to be topping the front-runners per-say, they are pretty good middle of the pack teams. They are showing there is a lot to be optimistic about, but need to demonstrate more. If they can hand Bridgeport another loss in their building on a back to back night, Then it should be a good sign they are going to claw their way out of it.
Falcons will be an interesting story. They have a first year coach and looked abysmal in their first few games, getting absolutely dominated at home. Part of me thinks the organization is working on damage control to try to get the fans back in it. Mass Mutual was nuts opening day. The Falcons only scored two goals in their first three games at home and that does have an effect on a fan base, and in this league, it seems like a team doing poorly can be easily forgotten. The games are over AM radio in a city where AM stations don't carry. If the Falcons sustain this, will the fans come back? If the fans don't come back will the Falcons sustain their excellence?
The Falcons are close to redeeming the season, but what they need might not come soon enough. What they need is a statement game. They have some tomato cans lined up, and some above .500 teams they will be facing too, but nothing more impressive than Bridgeport. If they beat down the Soundtigers, I'll be watching, however, if they beat down the Wolfpack, in Hartford, in dominant fashion? That might get the whole city's interest.

Unrelated: The Importance of Gender in Horror
I am a HUGE movie buff, and particularly am a fan of horror. Part of the reason I'm not blogging every day right now is because of how much time I'm contributing to my annual horror fest. (Really, with local Frank Vatrano, the Moose and Falcons winless, you would think I would be talking more about that, but no...)
One of the big things in modern horror has been the gender politics. Really, its one of the more interesting things about the genre. That and the fact that the heroes are often the villains, and that often horror is just dark comedy in disguise, but that can be different discussions.
Early on, monster movies were predominantly male driven, often science fiction with damsels in distress, then as we all know the story, Halloween came on to the scene (Though more accurately, Black Christmas and Texas Chainsaw Massacre,) and the Slasher genre was born. Halloween did a lot right, and it set the pace for a formula that would be come the standard about two years later when the Slasher boom was on with Friday the 13th and Prom Night honing in on that formula. More surprising, it became the genre standard even beyond slashers. See: Alien
If we start breaking down a lot of the hit horror movies post Halloween, there is no doubt a huge trend towards the "Final Girl" trope. The Final Girl trope is the trope horror has built its name on now, but it is the house bad horror is built upon. Let's take a look at some of the more successful modern horror titles since and see if the trend can hold.:
Nightmare on Elm Street: 2 Male, 2 Female, Female hero
Evil Dead: 3 Female, 2 Male, Male hero
Faculty: 3 female, 3 male, male hero
Alien: 2 female, 5 male, female hero, male top-billed
Hellraiser: 2 female, 2 male, female hero
The Thing: All male cast
Final Destination: Male hero in one, female in two.
Scream: 3 female, 4 male, female hero
Am I cherry picking a bit? Probably, but the point is good horror isn't necessarily built on the trope. When it is a female lead, it isn't usually a ditz either. Nancy in Nightmare reads up on self defense and home built traps. Ripley is a tough, often by the books co-captain who almost prevents the Xenomorph from ever getting on the ship.
Again, all well known, why is this important?
We are out of the slasher era and moving into an era dictated by remakes (and a huge influx of found footage films). Two films on that list above, The Thing and Evil Dead have shifted the gender of their heroes and cast from male heroes to female heroes and its sexist. Let me revise that, the final girl trope is sexist as a whole. Ok, digging myself deeper. Why don't I just let Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard explain for me:
"The virgin's death is optional, as long as it's last. The main thing is that she suffers."
-Cabin in the Woods
The way Hollywood utilizes the Final Girl trope isn't about empowering female, or writing smart women in general. It's about victimizing women for our entertainment. On top of it, its usually a sign of lazy writing. The Thing reboot was exhibit A. They threw a female lead in there because of genre expectations. Male characters can also be poorly written, but aren't usually subjected to the same psycho-sexual torture female characters are subjected to. (Alien being a great exception and example of this since John Hurt is more or less a rape victim in it, plus phallic Alien. It's kinda a movie about a rape victim beating rape, but not a la I Spit on Your Grave.)
Furthermore, in order to defeat a monster in a horror movie, characters have to over come their flaws and weaknesses. That is what makes a good character in any movie, and by extension a good movie. Male characters often are put in their situation because of transgressions. See: Saw. Female characters are in their situation usually because they're female. Usually an initial encounter is escaped through luck. The flaw they have to overcome is being female. (Halloween was a little guilty of this too.) That isn't good writing, it isn't good horror.
Again, I don't want all male led horror movies. I want horror to take off the training wheels and understand that it can utilize gender better for the messages in its movies, and be real horror. Good horror as gender balance and when it does it right it is perhaps the most progressive genre. It is frustrating to see how all the examples listed above could get it correct, and then they feed it it into the money machine, it changes around and remove that balance, or not see that it has to exist.
Is it really something that is all too important? Not really, silly movies usually. But hey, it's tropes, trends, and something worth noticing and thinking about. The more the audience thinks, the better our movies can get.

Sound Tigers: The Dark Horse Emerges
Bridgeport Sound Tigers haven't really been competitive the past few years. They've posted a fair amount of last place finishes in their division and so this year they have a lot to prove. A lot. To be honest, it makes this a little bit harder for me to determine what rivalries will be fun, what team prospects would you like to see and to be honest, I don't really know? When you are at rock bottom, you have to make it through everybody, so everyone is your biggest rival.
.
|
The Sound Tigers trying out their new look. |
This is a team that is starting everything off on the right foot, and while its still really early in the season, I'm buying stock now. The Falcons look kinda like crap. Ok, a lot like crap. so my initial dark horse candidate? Yeah. Shame because I buy a lot into the history and want Springfield to have something to cheer for. But the perennial losers fighting to win a championship? I can buy that tripe and have. Many, many times.
This is the story I want to sell this season. A feel good story the AHL can promote and use to draw attention. Ice caps, Hartford? Penguins? Potential villains from villainous organizations with curly mustaches and greedy sneers as they look down on the common fold of Bridgeport Connecticut, a troubled town with the noisy neighbors of Gun Wavin' New Haven who always stops by to mess up the place. Its a town that needs hope. That hope is a hockey team that captures the heart of not just the locals but of the nation as well... Where were you in the Bridgeport miracle championship run of 2015? Right there with them... And then the next year, right back to last place with them. Can't screw up too much of a good thing.
That or they just start strong and blow it in the stretch. Either way, its a fun story. Their next two games are going to be games to watch, with back to back match ups against the Ice Caps. St. Johns is a tough opponent whom they already played once, and now they will have them on the road, back to back, in the middle nowhere in a town with nothing but its minor league hockey team. This will be a good chance to continue with their statement and show that they are the team to beat this year and that they won't settle for last in the division this year.
PS. This doesn't change anything in regards to the River Rats (Albany Devils) or what I said about Bridgeport needing to make everyone a rival. There's still plenty of time to finish last, and they still need to play hungry. They still are a team with 4 joke banners until they get their first real one.

Who to watch, Second Saturday
Saturday means a huge slate of games. Tonight we have Albany at Toronto, Phantoms and Baby Pens, Wild against the Monsters, Amerks and Ice Caps, Providence and Bridgeport in their second back to back, San Antonio and the Griffins Utica at Hartford, Hershey at Portland, Senators at Syracuse, Charlotte at Chicago, Reign at the Moose in their second back to back, Texas at Rockford, And San Jose and Bakersfield.
It is a heavy, heavy slate today, and some really good games, who to keep an eye on?
1. Bridgeport and Providence
Last night was a decent match and Bridgeport remains undefeated. Providence will be looking for a good shot to be the one to deliver that blow after Providence got their first non-overtime loss of the season. Providence has been playing it tight and Bridgeport has too, expect this one to be close and well fought as the dark horse that is the Sound Tigers steam ahead.
2. Senators and Crunch
Both teams are looking to make and early impact this season after they have their first win no losses. I think both teams are capable of competing in the long haul so this early match up could help set the pace for either of these teams.
3. Charlotte at Chicago
Probably the best match up tonight, They are one and two in the central division, both are strong contenders, and Charlotte is undefeated, but its back to back for both teams, and Chicago has home advantage. I expect this to be a very competitive game, hopefully a bit chippy, and hopefully one that hockey fans will enjoy.

Post Game: Hartford Wolfpack and Providence Bruins
I also listened to the Falcons, Sound Tigers game the night before, and was ready to recap, but long story short, Springfield seems to be getting better, but not better enough quickly. Bridgeport meanwhile is on a roll. Just my luck, everyone has to prove me wrong. Both games were the only one for that night, so they were able to get a lot of attention.
Providence Buins: 3
The game was really tightly contested. Nobody maintained a lead very long, as each opponent seemed to Hulk out the moment they went down. It led to a span of very quick goals towards the end of the second. Three of the five goals scored in the second period coming within a span of 90 seconds in the final 3 minutes of play. The announcers couldn't even get through half of a goal scorers name before another one was scored. It was like the last five minutes everyone decided to pull their goalies and play with open nets. That was before a tough third with lots of chances for both sides stifled by great goalie play.
Bruins force another OT. McIntyre has been allowing more goals than his first loss, but he's been making the right plays when needed and seems to be playing better when the stakes are there. Unfortunately once the Providence Bruins get down to 3 on 3 they aren't as effective, and a dumb hooking penalty at the end gave the WolfPack a man advantage necessary to secure the winning goal. Hopefully though, the Providence Bruins can correct this, and managed longer than their first power play outing.
Who also is playing well? Frank Vatrano, a kid from East Longmeadow who grew up watching the Bruins and Springfield Falcons, and after a stint in Umass Ahmerst was recruited to the very organization he grew up loving. He's young, has a quick release, was named AHL player of the week for the opening week, and already has scored six goals over his first three games, including the one that forced overtime in the matchup against the baby pens. If he keeps this up, he may not be in Providence for long. I would hope not since he still needs some time to develop, and could hone in on some defensive skills.
As for the Wolfpack, they also played a great game. Their goalie Helberg made crucial saves, 37 total shots were taken against him and he held strong. Does the power play still suck? Yeah, they didn't get a power play goal until over time, making them 1-10 for the season. Tambellinni, their center seemed determined to break the streak in the 4-3 gift from Providence, taking shot after shot until he finally snuck one by McIntyre. It was a hell of an individual effort that rewarded the Wolfpack with their first win.
Providence faces the 3-0 Soundtigers (?!?) next at home this friday, with a rematch in Bridgeport Saturday and Hartford plays Utica at home Saturday in a matchup between the former Springfield Indians and the former Providence Reds. AHL original six like I keep talking about.
Tonight's games are late night western affairs, with a game between the Ontario Reign visiting the Manitoba Moose and the San Jose Sharks visiting the Stockton Heat. I will try to listen to one, maybe.

Good, Bad, Ugly: Opening Weeked
Good:
Providence Bruins, Rochester Americans, Bridgeport Soundtigers, Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins goaltending, Toronto Marlies
The most surprising of this is the Bridgeport Soundtigers. They come out swinging with 2-0 start, looking to prove me wrong I guess. Providence Bruins also had a pretty good start, 1-0-1 with an overtime loss. They had a strong first outing against a tough goalie and kept with it. Penguins goalie also was strong that first match, though they dropped their second game in their opening weekend back to back. Finally, Rochester set up their opening weekend to their 60th season right with two wins, and Marlies won back to back against Manitoba.
Bad:
Manitoba Moose, Hartford Wolfpack, Lake Erie/Rochester game
Manitoba dropped both games against the Marlies, off to an 0-2 start. Hartford loses a game against St. John's that they should have managed. Perhaps its a step back for the Wolfpack? I already detailed why I thought the Rochester Lake Erie game was a mess...
Ugly: Springfield Falcons
I did a recap of this already, but none of that looked pretty. I hope they clean it up.

Unrelated: LUEser
This is published post #42. For those of you who don't know, this number is very important. It is the answer to life the universe and everything. As to what the question is, nobody really knows.
This is the point in time where I recommend Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, either the book or the radio broadcast, not the movie. So rarely does one find a piece of literature so optimistic and joyful while being entrenched in nhilistic absurdist philosophy (save for maybe Vonnegut, but even still he's much darker). At least as optimistic and joyful a book can be while still having earth destroyed within the first hundred or so pages.
The book series is chaos theory start to finish, where the random and the insanity get set to the march of Humanity. When humanity gets boiled down to its simplest form it gets exposed for how silly it all is. It's what good observational humor does and HHG2G has some of the best around. In it it explains why a miracle fish disproves god's existence by proving his existence, how the universe has a population of zero, and the importance of telephone sanitizers.
Is there a point to this blog other than me saying to read a book series I've been enthralled with since a kid? No. Do I wish I could do a better tribute to it? Yes. But sometimes I just need to let it be.

Post Game: Hershey Bears vs Springfield Falcons
That got ugly quick.
But first things first. It is clear that the Falcons bought into providing a better presentation this year. They have a new jumbotron that looks like it takes up half the ice. It is beautiful and all to often I found myself looking at it as the glass was rattling six inches away from my face. They are giving fans every reason they possible could to buy into this product, taking the jump and the leap that are light years superior to products of the past.
Well, in terms of presentation that is...
Springfield had a good start to the game. Puck handling was a little sloppy all around, but it was comparable hockey, and it could have just been the condition of the ice. The first major problem was a blown 5-3 that the Falcons couldn't capitalize on. Neither team could capitalize on any of their 5-3 power plays. There were 3-4 of them so special situations defense was strong or offense was weak.
What was really weak was Springfield goal tending. In the first period, Springfield goalie Truetle looked way out of his league and definitely not ready for the start. Springfield has a new coach for the AHL this year, maybe he thought a new untested goalie might bring a spark to the new team? Whatever the reason, Truetle looked unready, posting a save percentage of .833 % on thirty shots, but a lot of soft goals with clear lanes and looks.
After one period the Falcons were already down 2-1, with a good goal on a 2 on 1 break away that gave me confidence about the Falcons maybe coming back and making it competitive, but then period 2 happened. I don't think the Falcons got a single puck on net. They got chippy and got dumb penalties. In that period they did manage to kill off one of the 5-3s but, ooh, ugly. Two more goals with no answer.
It didn't seem like the Falcons were communicating. They were banking pucks with nobody knowing where they were going. They tried to break through the blue line by passing into the areas of tightest coverage, or carry it over themselves when open guys could have had an easier time. The ice didn't help, a lot of slipping and falling but there was much to improve upon.
The Bears however proved why they were part of the class of the AHL. Their 5-3 defense was astounding. They played nice and tight, didn't chase and didn't let grant many opportunities. They were disruptive in the neutral zone. It's always hard determining credit or blame in a game this lop-sided. Maybe the Bears are just that good, or maybe the Falcons are just that bad this year, its hard to tell. Springfield might be in for a long year.

Who to Watch: Opening Night Pt. 2
So tonight is opening night for the rest of the league. After last night's mixed results there are a lot more options to check out tonight.
On the slate: Moose and Marlies, Falcons and Bears Baby Pens and Sound Tigers, Amerks and Comets, Ice Caps and Wolfpack, Crunch and Phantoms, Devils and Senators, Checkers and Wild, Admirals and Wolves. Rampage and Stars, Reign and Condors, Griffins and Gulls, Icehogs and Heat.
A lot of games, with Moose and Marlies going back to back after a decent game last night. Icehogs and Amerks also coming off of a win. Top three games in no particular order:
3. Hershey Bears at Springfield Falcons
Get ready Springfield, your new look Falcons should be more competitive. I will be there live at the game providing the in depth coverage all two of my readers expect of me. Keep an eye on this game by following me on twitter, @dmenty17.
2. Rochester Americans and Utica Comets
Comets have had a meteoric rise, so the question is can the Amerks follow up their home opening win with another against a stronger opponent. Plus, the Amerks radio broadcasters are pretty entertaining. Might be worth a listen just to hear them babble on.
1. Grand Rapids Giffins and San Diego Gulls
Both have pretty talented big brothers. In the past the Griffins were pretty good, and the AHL affiliate for the Ducks, not as much. However, the Gulls did pretty good in the lower prospect leagues. The big questions are if the Gulls are going to pull in the numbers and gain the energy to help make them more competitive in the new market. Hockey isn't new to the city, but now its a bigger hockey stage. I wanna see how the new energy and uniforms translate to their performance.
PS. Screw you Condors. It's you and the Wolfpack that are my rock-bottom most hated teams. I hope you lose all your games. You know what you did.

Recap: Opening Night Double Header
So, for opening night I kept my eye on two games adequately enough for full recaps. Lucky readers, its a two for the price of one, providing you guys insight into the operation of maybe teams. What a bargain!
So, let's start with the dumpster fire.
Rochester Americans: 6
Lake Erie Monsters: 3
Heading into this game, the biggest question on my mind was, "Who, pray, who was going to win the intermission Hot Dog Race?!?" My money was on Red Hot, with no bun to slow him down like White Hot, nor the tired stoner eyes seen on Beer Brat, and look that screams, "I'm ready to go!" Alas, I was wrong.
Curse you White Hot! Curse you!
If I had a second question, it would be if the Amerks could start off their historic season strong, and they got the win. Not just the win but the first goal of the season. The team celebrating their 60th anniversary in the league celebrating its 80th gets the first goal of the season? Only thing more poetic would be if it were the championship, but I'm not jumping on that bandwagon yet..
After the first period, Amerks had a commanding lead and were playing well, and then in the second period they forgot how to play and let the Monsters catch up. From there on out it was turnovers, dumb penalties, and generally sloppy play. Rochester could be optimistic about the fact they had a hat trick in game 1, and their goalie has a save percentage of .921 for the first game, but if they want to improve I would have to hope they improve on the mistakes. Also, they might not be as lucky if they continue to allow 38 shots on goal, and not spend more time in the offensive zone, but a win is a win. One where they started strong and ended strong at least. That said, it came at a cost as Center Phil Varone was either ejected or left with injury after committing and unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.
If you're a Lake Erie fan however, I would be concerned about your goaltender. .783 save percentage against 23 shots. Really soft goals too. Lake Erie also made some bad mistakes. There were a lot of penalties. It was a lot of time in the offensive end, but not much to show for it.
I thought it was a sloppy game all around, but hey, mistakes balance out.
Now what I thought was the better game.
Wilkes-Barre-Scranton Penguins: 2 (OT)
Providence Bruins: 1
This isn't to say there was sloppy play, but it was compensated with two outstanding goalie performances. Each team had over 40 shots on goal. The baby pens were so close to a fantastic shut out when the Baby Bs tied it up with less than two minutes to go. Crucial timing, and then...
Bruins lost. Like immediately starting overtime.
Bruins as an NHL organization have this habit, one really good period, one really bad one and have a terrible power play.. The baby Bs were really strong in the first period, dominating, but let a goal slip by in the second, and couldn't capitalize on any of their power plays. While the Baby B's were more consistant, they definitely are built in Big Brother's mold, for better or worse. What is encouraging is that their goalie is off to a relatively good start and if that level of play continues, Zane McIntyre might end up jumping over Subban in regards to who the Bruins can deal for prospects.
The Baby Pens did get the win, despite the penalties and their goal tender also impressed, Matt Murray is entering his second season and has been a dominant goalie in the league since being pulled up. While I don't think either the goalies are in a race to replace either Rask or Andre-Flurry, both are setting their teams up for strong goal tending futures.
Plus there was a pretty good fight in this game. I said it when I did the Providence Bruins games to gun for preview, it was going to be a great game and I'm sure if you went you were not disappointed. I mean outside of the fact the home team lost.
So, let's start with the dumpster fire.

Who to Watch: Opening night
Wow, it's October. #isitoctoberyet is finally done.
Remember 15 blogs in 17 days? Ha ha ha ha. Past two weeks have sucked. But hockey is here and it's time to get excited for minor league hockey!
Anyway, for opening night, providence hopes to get a better start to the season than big brother did against Wilkes Barre. You got the marlies vs the moose in a non division match up. Monsters and amerks. Rockford and San Jose, griffins and condors. What games should you pay attention to? My top 3 in no order.
3. Wilkes Barre and Providence.
It's a division game where the teams are rivals at all levels. It is going to be interesting to see how they handle the division moves and see If the hate can be building.

2. Lake Erie and Rochester
I wanna see how Rochester handles opening the season at home for their historic season. Probably the game I'm going to be keeping an eye on the most due to where its scheduled

.
1. Rockford and San Jose
Sharks and blackhawks have been great teams over the past 10 years or so, and a lot of that comes from roster depth and development. Probably the best match up. With the new team location, I want to see San Jose justify their new team and show me that San Jose deserves more hockey.

Eastern Conference Power Rankings
Now that I finished off the games to gun for for the eastern conference, I figured I know enough to do some rankings.
1. Utica Comets
- No doubt, cream of the crop right here.
2. Toronto Marlies
- I think Marlies will continue to nip at Utica's heels.
3. Hartford Wolf Pack
- Hartford is coming off of a strong year, they will continue to be hungry, even though it kills me to say that.
4. Binghamton Senators
-I know I just called them middle of the pack, but I have a hunch they rise a bit just to stay competitive.
5.Wilkes Barre-Scranton Penguins
-Perpetual Play-off contender. This year will be no different.
6. St. Johns IceCaps
-New look and a new team will be enough to energize this affiliate to great things.
7. Hershey Bears
- The bears are almost always in the mix. Just not the same way the Penguins have been lately though.
8. Springfield Falcons
-I think the new look might be enough to get them into the play-off mix this year. I may just be overly optimistic though.
9. Syracuse Crunch
- They were in the playoffs last year, I think they're in the hunt but with the new alignments and new look teams, might not have what it takes.
10. Providence Bruins
-Might be in the mix, but big brother might be pulling too many players this year to keep little brother functional.
11. Rochester Americans
- With the historical season, their division might be too tough so prepare for Rochester to bank on the history, and not the scoreboard.
12. Lehigh Valley Phantoms
-Not a good start being sub 500 last year, I expect Lehigh to not do too much more, but make some improvement.
13. Portland Pirates
-Portland is the definition of a yo-yo team. They are coming off of a good year, I am anticipating a bad year to follow up.
14. Albany Devils
They were above .500 the past two years, this year they dip back below it. They are in what might be the most competitive division. They will take a huge step back into their comfort zone this year.
15. Bridgeport Sound Tigers
-Ba ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha. Yeah.
Honestly, this is mostly arbitrary. It's pretty early, and perhaps too early to tell, but its just an initial assessment. I'm sure the rest will show great change over the course of the season.

Binghamton Senators: Games to Gun For
Games to gun for will go over specific games and opponents fans might want to see. Criteria are based upon AHL rivalries, fun teams to watch in the AHL and regional rivalries between the local NHL teams. Consider it a guide for casual fans to know how to get the biggest bang for their buck.
How many more of these do I have to do? Fifteen? Oh. Well, at least one Conference is out of the way. Seventeen days to do fifteen teams?
Home Opener: Oct. 10
Opponent:Albany Devils
Analysis: Binghamton finished right at .500 last year, and Albany was above .500 but was still ranked in a division ranked fourth out of five. Albany had one good year and was coming down from the high, I think they go back to winning less than half their games. This should be a fun way to start the season with with what is potentially an easy win and something Binghamton fans should be to see.

Binghamton missed the playoffs last year, and have been eliminated in the first round twice since they won the Calder Cup in 2011. It isn't for a lack of trying, they have had only one losing season since that championship. They have been habitually in the upper-middle of the pack and that will keep them in the mix. They will be on the edge of another playoff run, but the question is will they have the energy to get back into it?

Opponents:
1. Rochester Americans
Rochester is a pretty consistent team in regards to annual performance, and it aligns well with how the Binghamton Senators. Since Binghamton doesn't have any carry over this year in regards to divisional rivals, Rochester should be an interesting match-up. Plus, living in Albany, you have an interesting mix of NHL teams competing for attention, including Rochester's big brother, the Buffalo Sabres. They play ten times.
2. Syracuse Crunch
Syracuse is the team that Binghamton has registered the most fights against. They're a comparable team If you love hockey fights, keep an eye out for the Crunch games. Five home matches, ten times total.
3. Utica Comets
I'm starting to buy into the Comets. They have done nothing but get better. Is there a good chance your team might lose? Yes, but a tough fought victory is a fruit that is all the more ripe and sweet. Four match-ups at home and eight total match-ups
4. St. Johns IceCaps
If there is a team that Binghamton will have to get through to secure a play-off spot, it will be the new look IceCaps, whom is also a big brother rival. I think the IceCaps will look to improve, and they are the comparable teams that will provide the best hockey. They play eight times, four at home.
5. Toronto Marlies
This is another play-off favorite. If Binghamton wants to make it to the play-offs they will have to go through the them or at least keep up with them, and that means getting a few wins against them. They have six chances to get wins against them, three at home.

SOS: Schedule - Fan Support
We as fans need to step up if we want the AHL to get better. Let me explain.
People need to buy into the AHL so they can get a better product. Think of it as pumping energy into a machine. The more you pump in, the more you get. The more sugar in your system, the bigger the sugar rush.
The Utica Comets in this instance are the ideal franchise. They have a legitimate fan base. The result is they have seemingly worked out a fairly well balanced schedule. They have a better travel budget, they can have better variety of opponents and can diversify their product while still building up rivalries without saturating an opponent. How are they able to do this? Fan support.
The fans bought in, showing it through 17 sell out home games. Utica is on rise and its because of what the fans can do to help galvanize the team, pump money back into the system and demand attention be paid to the way the team is managed and run. And because of that, the organization seems to be listening, and in a year where I am prepared to declare Utica a heavy favorite to win the East, it makes it more important.
And Utica's situation is a perfect example of things I've already been saying. They have rivalries. They have history, to a point. They are in a market that isn't saturated by an NHL team. The home town can call them their own. And it all works perfectly. Utica is so important to that community that it will help drive the success of the community and ultimately help make Vancouver a contender, if the Comets aren't made the more valuable piece of the franchise through whatever championships they win.
But, those factors also worked because of the X-Factor they couldn't control which is the fan support. Fans bought it. If you are an AHL fan, and want your team to succeed, you need to be a maniac about these things. You need to bring friends to games, you need to talk the team up, build up hatred for other teams. Get others to drink the Kool-Aid.
The AHL will be a better product if the fans show that they want one. Just take the leap of faith and let's hope that the AHL reads all the right cues.

St. John's has a new affiliate, and its a doozy. Admittedly, when I look at the Ice Caps I don't immediately think of the Canadiens the way I would for other teams. I'm hoping that this means I can be objective about the IceCaps without my immense hatred of the Canadiens stand in my way. Life as a Bruins fan who is blogging about the AHL for no real reason can be difficult like that. That said, last year, the Bulldogs didn't make the play-offs either. Probably because they were too busy hanging out with all of their celebrity friends. Then again, neither did the Ice Caps and they don't really have an excuse. However, with a new look comes optimism and St. Johns certainly could be hungry to improve, especially as the new look team tries to forge its own new path. Of course, I'm not sure if they even have internet out in St. Johns, so if you're a St. Johns fan, are you even reading this?

Analysis: It's a delayed start to the home season, but that is going to be the IceCaps season in a nutshell. Long road trips, long home stands, so its like two weeks on two weeks off. Its the only way they can do it really, so if you're a fan be prepared to binge and purge the hell out of this team because you have no other options.

Opponents:
1. Toronto Marlies
For reasons explained earlier on this blog, The Toronto Marlies are probably the best rival for the new look IceCaps. They are also an original six affiliate team that is a massive rival to big brother. While St, Johns is a lot further away than the two big brothers, (a two hour flight) there aren't many teams near St. Johns so beggars can't be choosers.
2. Portland Pirates
Geographically speaking, this is the closest opponent St. Johns has. While there are lots of reasons for a rivalry, proximity is usually a good starting point. They only play four times, and aren't a divisional opponent, but really, they are the closest thing they have to competition. Ok, maybe I'm just talking this up too much now, but historically speaking, they were a divisional opponent last year, and all that bad blood just doesn't go away because of new alignment, affiliations and teams.
3. Utica Comets
They play last years Calder Cup finalists eight times. If the New Look IceCaps want to make their mark in this division, Utica is a good place to start. And as fans, you want to see your team take on the best and pull it off. That is how teams get swagger. So these are great bonding experiences for fans and great games to watch if you feel your team has momentum.

Another classic NHL rivalry, and being in the same division means another good AHL rivalry. They play eight times. Let your love of big brother help feed your love of the little brother in these games, and expect that the AHL divisions will help make these games important.
5. Rochester Americans
I could talk some more about NHL rivalries, the 60th season, and so forth but let me simplify it. Americans vs Canadiens. Amerks and Habs. Now that is a hell of a nationalistic match up. Eight games. Four at home.

Toronto Marlies: Games to Gun for
Games to gun for will go over specific games and opponents fans might want to see. Criteria are based upon AHL rivalries, fun teams to watch in the AHL and regional rivalries between the local NHL teams. Consider it a guide for casual fans to know how to get the biggest bang for their buck.
Toronto Marlies are a rare situation in that big bro operates in the same town. This helps feed some local rivalries, and such, helps make all the players more recognizable in the community, but as I said before, I wish they spread that love a little more. But then again, Toronto is pretty hockey hungry, so it isn't like it's a weak market. Plus little brother did what big brother didn't do last year in that they saw the playoffs. Knocked out in the first round, yes, but they at least made it.
Full disclosure, the Marlies are the only team to follow me back on Twitter. Does that mean they get more favorable coverage? Yes. Because I'm petty like that. If that bugs you, grow a pair or get your team to follow me. I also accept bribes
.
Home Opener: 10/9Opponent: Manitoba Moose
Analysis: Toronto starts off with back to back against Manitoba, so if you miss Friday, you can always catch an encore Saturday. It's a situation that pops up repeatedly throughout the schedule, opponents getting stacked so for a while you see one opponent and move on to the next. It's an interesting strategy. Rivalries aren't as passionate in the AHL, so thought process seems to be, save on travel, and let the regulars grow to hate them over short time. That said, Manitoba is non-division so opening weekend is inconsequential to a point, a good chance to focus on the home team and see their skills in a game that matters less.

1. Utica Comets
This rivalry is all about last year and the road to the Calder Cup. The Comets are a tough team with a rabid fan base that stand directly in the path of the Marlies. Last year the two teams ended up with even records against each other and both made the playoffs. If the Marlies want to get a cup, they have to halt the meteoric rise of the Comets. It works out well that these two will face off eight times since the time they spend on the ice together will go a long way in determining this divisions standings.
2. St. John's Icecaps
The new look Icecaps seek to be a serious new rival to the Marlies, which is perfect because that new look is from one of big brothers biggest rivals: the Canadiens. This is where the geographic conditions can help a rivalry because ice caps have a chance to distill that hatred and pour it on top of the AHL rivalry. I anticipate lot of bad blood during these match ups. These two teams face off twelve times, six of which will be at home so there will be plenty of time for tensions to rise between these two.
3. Binghamton Senators
Another AHL rivalry made better by the bitterness of the NHL rivalry. It certainly helps Binghamton isn't a slouch, having made the playoffs three of the past five years. Sure, last year they weren't as hot, but they have always seemed to bounce back... They will play three times at home, six times total.
4. Rochester Americans
It's a historic season for the Americans, so expect a lot of fight from them. And then some fight from the Marlies. Then some fight among the rival big brothers of the two. They also face off a total of eight times, four at home.
5. Albany Devils
The Albany Devils are not what I call the best of the best, but they are a decent NHL rivalry in Toronto. Some of that carries down, and like Bridgeport, Albany is the team most likely to let itself get beat up in this division, so its a good shot at a win. They play six times, three at home

The Utica Comets are another one of those historical teams I would designate part of the AHL "original six." They started off in Quebec as the Beavers in the 30s but spent most of their years in Springfield MA, helping make the region home to the AHL, building its rivalry with Providence and subsequently Hartford, while winning seven Calder Cups. Of course, that was in Springfield, and the Comets have only been in Utica the past two years, where they haven't won anything. Last year Utica got close but stumbled against Manchester and lost in the finals in five games. However, with a new conference, and a pretty passionate fan base, Utica should be a fun team to watch this year.

Home Opener: October 27
Opponent: Rochester Americans
Analysis: Opening against a historical and divisional opponent like the Americans is a great way to open at home, even if it is a delayed home opener. But if you don't already have your tickets, don't bother. First two games at home are already sold out. It's a passionate fan base up there I guess and they are eager for a Calder Cup. It kinda makes me nervous about trying to figure out who the biggest rivals to this team are, but I think I can make some pretty good guesses...
Opponents
1. Binghamton Senators
Last year Binghamton ended the year against Utica 3-3 with all the losses coming in overtime. That says to me that they're pretty evenly matched and should lead to some good games this year. It also should help that Binghamton leads the top of Utica's fight charts. While Utica is far from Syracuse in regards to fight totals, its a good sign that these games will have a little extra heat. They play each other eight times total.
2. Toronto Marlies
Are they a New York team? No, but like Binghamton Toronto is pretty evenly matched. They also went .500 for wins/losses last year and made the play-offs. They will be the team the Comets might most have to contend with for a play-off spot so in terms of AHL parity, these match ups will be pretty even and fun to watch. They also play each other eight times total, four times at home.
3. Rochester Americans
Another historical team, and the Rochester Americans will be hungry for ways to make their 60th year special. I think Rochester is also very aware that the road to the Cup will probably go through Utica and so expect these games to have a lot of heat and passion The fact that the first of the eight times they played are sold out is a good sign that there will be a lot of energy during these match ups.
4. Albany Devils
Albany is kinda like that bad team that knocks mediocre teams out of the play-offs late in a season. In the past they kinda have ruined a lot of things. They beat Utica in their first ever home opener, when Gordie Howe dropped the puck and the won every game against Utica last year. Hell, Utica has never beaten the Albany Devils, and that is saying something. It's like how the Canadiens could be absolute garbage and still win against a top seeded Bruins team. They're just in the heads of the team. Luckily this year Utica gets more chances than ever to beat the Devils with eight match ups, four at home.
5. (Tie) Springfield Falcons/Hartford Wolf Pack
This one is all about history. They face off against the teams they once called a rival and a team from where they once called home. Granted is there any real history or rivalry? No, but if you're a hockey history buff, these games should be fun. You can pretend its the 1930s and drive up in a Ford Model T before seeing formerly Springfield take on Formerly Providence. They face off against both Springfield and Hartford four times each, for a grand total of eight times. (Utica might have the most balanced schedule in all of the AHL.)

Some sites are calling this a challenge or fighting words, in which case the Crunch are looking to get an early start on their season. Frankly, I would rather call it what this is: Lame. It's amateur showboating to challenge the guy who's such a master showboater the only way he could up his game was to run for president. This whole thing reeks of Jackie Moon wrestling a bear. The worst part is it could have been so much better.
The AHL is spending so much time retreading old Will Farrell bits, and making jokes that are landing way too early and way too late. Come on AHL, you can do better. I know the worst advice I can give is to say "Be funny" but dammit, be funny AHL. The challenge wasn't nearly bold enough, not outrageous enough.

This week, at the zero hour of a long weekend, here's an opinion you've never heard before: ratings on the internet are hollow and meaningless.
There are two types of ratings on the internet. 5 stars and 1/no stars. Everything else in between doesn't exist. You have to either love a movie on Netflix or scorn it so it burns into the ground. The real rating sometimes comes somewhere in the between because the more people that five star it will become averaged with the no stars and so forth.
All the ratings options that exist on the 5 pt scale |
But why does it have to be so binary? Are we so in love with the 1/5 scale that we can't think things are average? It takes the concept of quality, the real question and makes what we see as either great! or terrible. While all feedback in general comes in two flavors, good or bad, there are degrees that such extremes can't validate.
I've always been of the opinion of scaled ranking. Was it average? 3 stars. was it good? Maybe a 4. I try to reserve only the life changing good or bad for the 5s or the 1s. If you can find a flaw, don't give it a five. If you still enjoy the app in the littlest bit, give it more than a 1 when a bug crashes it.
This is at the point where the ratings are devalued as computer programs and companies are looking for more numbers, more fives when they should be looking for more feedback. They get self conscious about 4s when all it means was good but not the revolution. I've been asked why I thought the service wasn't good enough over a 4. Called at home and at work over those rankings for local services.
You can't hop into an app without a daily ask for a rating. It devalues the system because its enforced feedback is set to the extremes and the livelihood is based upon perfect scores when there should be room for good, bad, great, terrible and mediocre. I'm ok with not being impressed all the time, and honestly, those fives probably aren't all impressed either. I'm not impressed nearly as much by them as you think I should be.

Albany Devils: Games to Gun for
Games to gun for will go over specific games and opponents fans might want to see. Criteria are based upon AHL rivalries, fun teams to watch in the AHL and regional rivalries between the local NHL teams. Consider it a guide for casual fans to know how to get the biggest bang for their buck.
Since moving from Lowell, the Albany Devils have only made the play-offs once. And they got knocked out in the first round. So if you're in Albany, the Devils might not be the biggest rally-horn for you. You might be more interested in the other teams around you. Seriously, Bridgeport has more playoff appearances since the move. If Bridgeport is the Cleaveland Browns of the AHL, Albany would be the Jaguars. Which means they should try to be hungry to compete, though in the words of Homer Simpson, "Trying is the first step towards failure."
Home Opener: 10/24
Opponent: Portland Pirates
Albany might have the roughest of the rough in terms of schedules this year. Not necessarily because of opponents, though there should be plenty of good competition, but because their home opener is a non-divisional opponent two weeks into the season. It's as though they decided, "Well, we don't play at home the ninth or tenth, let's just not play at home. This may help them later down the stretch but it doesn't feel like a home opener, and shouldn't be treated as such.
Opponents:
As I said in my Bridgeport Sound Tigers Games to Gun For Everyone. Everyone is a rival because you need to take that first step and over take one person to have a rivalry. Albany won't be showing up on anybody else's list in this division (outside of recommendations to see an easy win) mostly because they haven't been competitive, so they have to prove me wrong and make it worth it.
1. Bridgeport Sound Tigers
Am I reading the schedule right? Do the Albany Devils face the Sound Tigers, a non-divisional opponent eight times? Eight? The reason you want to see these games, its a comedy of errors. Two teams perennially ranked last in their divisions facing off. If there ever was a race for last place in the league, these two are top competitors. It's the toilet bowl, eight times. It almost makes me want to re-rank the Sound Tigers Opponents.
2. Syracuse Crunch
This team is the only divisional hold over from last year for the Albany Devils. Plus its a play off team, so its always good to unseat a team you know to be competitive. As a bonus, both the Sound Tigers and the Crunch led the league in fights last year. There is a good chance you will see one by targeting any of these match ups. They see each other eight times.
3. Utica Comets
They face off eight times, and of all the divisional rivals, they are the most highly skilled, placing second in the league in points last year. If there is anyone you want to take out, its the guy at the top and a Pyrrhic victory is still a form of victory.
4. St. Johns Ice Caps
I may be ragging on the Devils for being perrenial losers, but in the conference standings they had ten game points over the Ice caps. Granted that was the old Ice Caps, but if nothing ever really changes, then these eight games might be the best chance to see a win. Some how I doubt it, the new Ice Caps affiliate tends to be pretty good.
5. Binghamton Senators
They face off an odd nine(?) times and haven't changed dramatically since last year. When I talk about how comparable hockey means entertaining and watchable hockey, this is what I mean. These two teams are probably the best match up as far as comparability goes and your best chance at seeing a nice pair of evenly matched teams go at it.

AHL Twitter Wars: Celebrities, Smackdown and NHL 16 ratings
Figured I would check in with AHL Twitter to see how things were going. Any new chirps, or beefs? Anything of interest? Ok, so the Hamilton Bulldogs keep talking up something. They've been scorned by the AHL and re-aligned with the OHL, lets see how they're handling the transistion...
Yup, that is a burn and half. That's the equivalent of breaking up with someone and then the next day they have new arm candy that happens to be a model / astrophysicist. "Fine, you don't want us in the AHL? Whatever, we still got Tom Hanks and Martin short doing promotional bits for us."
Wait... You mean the Bulldogs are really St. Johns now, and the Ontario Team is just some old OHL team renamed? Why is this all so complicated!?!
Anyway, obligatory Hartford Wolf Pack / Springfield Falcons.
Admittedly, I had a hand in this one, but they took the ball and ran with it. But Springfield, what are you doing? You have a video saying vs Hartford games don't sell as well as vs Providence! That's when you chirp back with something like "It's cute how Hartford thinks its a rival when they don't sell as well. #irrelevant" or something like that. Instead your response is...
But that's fine, it works. It basically says "We'll do our talking on the ice. We're coming for you." Which is good. Certainly better than how the Checkers and Ice Caps "Smack talk"
What I left out was all the talk about who had better fried chicken. No. Seriously.
Clean it up guys.
I know I talk about how much the Crunch fight, but it seems like most of the Phantoms countdown images involve fights...
Oh, and #isitoctoberyet memes and gifs keep flying in.
And with the release of NHL 16, there were a lot of tweets going out about that. The best is the following exchange:
I'm sure there were more highlights I'm missing but they got drowned out in a lot of rookie tournament action going

Rochester Americans: Games to Gun for
Games to gun for will go over specific games and opponents fans might want to see. Criteria are based upon AHL rivalries, fun teams to watch in the AHL and regional rivalries between the local NHL teams. Consider it a guide for casual fans to know how to get the biggest bang for their buck.
As I have mentioned before, the Rochester Americans are a historical AHL team. This year they are celebrating their 60th anniversary as a franchise. They have six Calder Cups, one for every decade the franchise has been around, however its been exactly a decade since they've seen more than one opponent in the post season. This is certainly a trend the Sabres Affiliate would hope to amend. Making the playoffs is nice and all, but its also nice to make it past your first round. Fun fact, Rochester, Utica, Hershey, Milwaukee, Iowa, Binghamton, Portland, Manitoba and San Antonio are all older than their NHL counterparts. Hartford Wolf Pack was founded the same year as the Rangers, along with a few other expansion teams that formed the same year as their affiliate. That means greater than 1/3 of the AHL is as old, if not older than their NHL team. For a league as volatile as the AHL, that says a lot about both the NHL and the AHL...
Non-commercial / Fair use, Amerks Hockey twitter |
Home opener: October 9
Opponent: Lake Erie Monsters
Analysis: The Amerks open up their historic season at home against a non-divisional opponent. This is what eats me up on the inside. I think the opening game of the season, one where the team will be celebrating opening its 60th year would be so important and should be a game you go to. However...
Opponents.
1. Utica Comets
This is by far the superior match up. Utica is one of the teams I consider to be an original six team, and the salt in the wound is that they play the next night. It's such a huge oversight and a flaw in the schedule that it actually upsets me. I'm sad that the Americans don't get to open against the best opponent, a historical AHL match up, for their historical season. I'm very tempted to say, no, that game against the Monsters is just an exhibition match and this is the true home opener. Blow off game one, and make Game 2 the true start to your season. Then watch as the comets face off eleven more times (five at home for the Americans). Help make the season special by watching two teams who have been around for a long time face off.
2. St. Johns Ice Caps
Follow up that history with more History. St. Johns has been around for a while too you know. And to make that sweeter, they are the Canadiens affiliate. Even more history, and an NHL rival of the Sabres. History, passion, and competition are the three magic words that make hockey be beautiful. See them at home up to four times, or travel to see them all eight.
3. Syracuse Crunch
Another one of my AHL original six opponents makes the list! They meet ten times, five of those will be at home. As I talked about on the Crunch games to gun for blog, expect fights.
4. 5. 6. Hershey Bears, Hartford Wolf Pack, Springfield Falcons
I'm going off the beaten path a bit here, and for the rest of the blog. Normally I would say, make it about the division rivalries, but I think in a historic season, getting to see historic opponents outweigh that true blue rivalry. Sure, you can have a good time watching them go up against Albany, ect, but as I mentioned before and could rehash my original six blog, make these games a priority. They face the Bears once at home, Hartford twice at home, Falcons once at home.
